Cannot access Esxi 6.5 through Web or SSH

I have a simple set up with two Esxi hosts and an Untangle router as shown in the diagram

When I try to access the Web Ui of the Esxi host as http://172.16.20.10 I get the "This site cannot be reached" and ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT message.I am able to ping from any device on the 192.168.1.0/24 work and and trace route from Untangle works and the ports are not blocked.  I have also checked the static routes using Esxcli commands on the host itself and they are all in place.

I have reinstalled the HPE customized image on the Esxi and when the Esxi host gets a DHCP IP address (192.168.1.xx) I am able to access the web interface without any issues. I have been through the logs on the Esxi host and checked firewalls on both Untangle and Esxi hosts and now I have no clue what else to do.  Can some one please point me in the right direction?  Any help/clues much appreciated.

Adding a physical disk: problem booting

I am trying to add a physical disk as an IDE disk to a virtual machine with VMWare Fusion. For that, I use vmware-rawdiskCreator to create a .vmdk file that will represent a connection to my external hard drive, following the procedure at TechReminders: Add physical disk to VMware Fusion guest OS. It seems to go well (no errors), but when booting the VM there is an error window ("Operation not permitted" : "Cannot open the disk '...MyVM.vmwarevm/rawDiskFile.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. Module 'Disk' power on failed. Failed to start the virtual machine."). Looking at the vmware.log file within the virtual machine file I see these types of errors:

vROPS Service Discovery Management ??

Hi Guys,

I'm hoping to get some feedback around the Operations Service Discovery Management Pack for vRops it's visibility and or usefulness. The environment is running on v6.5 base and will be going to the current Update 2 at some point.

My main concerns around this management pack are;

It seems to be very heavy on the VMs compared to VIN, both on performance impact and leaving footprints ie. event log.

The amount of information given is not worth it. Give very little in terms of services and what objects they communicate with.

Please let me know of  any other issues experience.

Also, has anyone managed to run VIN successfully on v6.5?

Single Host to vSAN Cluster Migration

Hi, lets say I have a single ESXi server using only local storage. Later the company buys two more servers to enable vSAN (or one more, plus the remote witness). ¿Is there any migration road map available or is it backup and start a vSAN cluster from the ground up?

Thanks. Joe.

Changing License for vCentre and ESXI, do i need to update the license set in vCloud UM?

Hello,

i'm about to change the license for vCentre and vSphere. Do i need to change the license sets in vCloud Usage Meter or it will automatically sync and update? Current version is 3.5. Will upgrade to 3.6.1 after the license are done.

Version: vSphere 6.0 U2  and vCentre 6.0 U2

So I upgraded and things seemed somewhat fine for a day or two and today I went to use my virtual machine and I'm stuck at advanced options page. Startup repair doesn't work, I don't have a system restore point. I think my only option is System Image recovery. I've searched high and low bit can't quite figure out how would go about doing that. Anybody have any ideas or had a similar experience?

Thanks in advance.

Managment network failure on vSAN does not trigger isolation response, so VMs are left in a totally useless state on the host with failed network

We are migrating to vSAN from a tradtiional SAN environment and are testing various failure scenarios as a part of the final validation of the new vSAN cluster, we have run tests to simulate motherboard networking failure, network card failure and host power issues to ensure HA works correctly.

Managment and vSAN networks are isoltated and run separate on both our existing SAN environment and the vSAN cluster

These tests all work fine:

  • Both clusters, If a host loses power, HA restarts guest VMs on another host.
  • On the existing cluster, using SANs, when both storage network cables are removed, HA restarts guest VMs on another host, as expected.
  • On the existing cluster, using SANs, when both Management network cables are removed, HA restarts guest VMs on another host as expected
  • On the new cluster, when both vSAN networking cables are removed, the HA works fine and guest VMs running on the affected host are restarted elsewhere.

However, on the new cluster, when both Mangement networking cables are removed, HA does nothing!  This seems to be related to HA being on the vSAN network and not the management network as on vSAN it seems this is noticed but does not trigger any isolation response.

We have setup isolation addresses as recommended for the vSAN system (which uses the vSAN networking for HA communication) and setup the following advanced settings:

das.isolationAddress0 10.20.30.254

das.isolationAddress1 10.20.30.253

das.respectVmHostSoftAffinityRules true

das.respectVmVmAntiAffinityRules true

das.useDefaultIsolationAddress false

Even enabling guest heartbeat monitoring doesn't cause any HA actions.  These are our HA settings:

Host failure Restart VMs Restart VMs using VM restart priority ordering.

Proactive HA Disabled Proactive HA is not enabled.

Host Isolation Shut down and restart VMs VMs on isolated hosts will be shut down and restarted on available hosts.

Datastore with Permanent Device Loss Power off and restart VMs Datastore protection enabled. Always attempt to restart VMs.

Datastore with All Paths Down Power off and restart VMs Datastore protection enabled. Ensure resources are available before restarting VMs.

Guest not heartbeating Reset VMs VM monitoring enabled. VMs will be reset.

Once the management network has failed, the VM clearly shows as 'disconnected':

Date Time: 05/02/2018, 17:09:42

Type: Information

Target: Failover-TEST-VM

Description: 05/02/2018, 17:09:42 Failover-TEST-VM on host host37.testvsan.com in TSTSITE is disconnected

The host, HOST37 also shows as disconnected and is recording various failure events:

Date Time: 05/02/2018, 17:09:42

Type: Error

Target: host37.testvsan.com

Description: 05/02/2018, 17:09:42 Host host37.testvsan.com in TSTSITE is not responding

Date Time: 05/02/2018, 17:09:43

Type: Error

Target: host37.testvsan.com

Description: 05/02/2018, 17:09:43 Alarm 'Host connection failure' on host37.testvsan.com triggered by event 819306 'Host host37.testvsan.com in TSTSITE is not responding'

05/02/2018, 17:19:36 Cannot synchronize host host37.testvsan.com.

Event Type Description: Failed to sync with the vCenter Agent on the host

Description: 05/02/2018, 17:23:45 Cannot synchronize host host37.testvsan.com

Event Type Description: Failed to sync with the vCenter Agent on the host

However, despite this clear issue, the HA State is showing as fine:

vSphere HA State

Status

Connected (Slave)

Description

The vSphere HA Agent on the host is connected to a vSphere HA Master Agent over the management network.

This state is the normal operating state for agents that are not the vSphere HA Master Agent.

The vSphere HA protected VMs on this host are monitored by one or more vSphere HA Master Agents, and the agents will attempt to restart the VMs after a failure.

I can see why changes were made to ensure HA and vSAN 'see' the same network partitions, but it seems that in moving from traditional SAN to vSAN we have less resilience than before, because we need two totally separate networks to fail to get an automatic HA failover.

On the non-vSAN system, the loss of managment/guest networking leaves the VMs useless but quickly triggers an isolation response.

But on the vSAN cluster, the total loss of managment/guest networking does not trigger any action by VMWare HA - it requires manual intervention to migrate totally isolated VMs onto another host.

Am I misunderstanding this, or have we lost the ability to cope with management/guest networking issues by moving to vSAN?

Remote Desktop to VM closes immediately after connection

Hi,

Hopefully this is the right forum to ask this question..

I am having an issue where all users connecting to a particular guest experience the Remote Desktop closing immediately after initiating the connection.

Oddly enough this happens to all users, but does not happen on any other guests - where RDP works as expected.

No error messages are shown and the event logs within the guest see it as a 'log out'.

The strangest thing is, connection via the vsphere console is fine. I can log into windows here and use the VM as normal.

Up until a few weeks ago, there were no issues.

If anyone has any suggestions on how I can get around this, that would be great.

/VSAN/DOMOwnerForceWarmCache deprecated in vSAN 6.7 ROBO ?

Hello,

When I try to set  /VSAN/DOMOwnerForceWarmCache  to 1  (default=0)  on a vSAN 2node ROBO Cluster, it triggers an "Advanced vSAN Configuration in Sync" alert on all nodes (incl. the witness 6.7 appliance if I set it there too).

I could set this without problems in vSAN 6.6.x

Feature no longer needed in vSAN 6.7 or bug?

VCSA 6.0U2f upgrade to VCSA 6.7 pre-upgrade check failed with "VMware Tools driver is not initialized"

I'm trying to upgrade a VCSA 6.0U2f upgrade to VCSA 6.7 and get pre-upgrade check failed with the error title "VMware Tools driver is not initialized".  The rest of the error message states "Make sure that VMware Tools driver is initialized and is running properly on the source vCenter Server Appliance (vcsa01.example.local). Also make sure that the ESXi host which contains the source vCenter Server Appliance is not under heavy load. Contact VMware support in case the issue cannot be resolved."

I've checked several services on the vcsa and all appear to running w/out issue.

# service vmware-tools-services status

vmtoolsd is running

I've looked at the logs and the error.log file only states:

No file found matching /etc/vmware/install-defaults/cm.url

No file found matching /etc/vmware-vpx/vcdb.properties

No file found matching /etc/vmware-vpx/vc-extn-cisreg.prop

I've checked and all these files actually exist.

The vcsa has been rebooted several times but no change in behavior.  All my searching hasn't turned us a single hit on this error message.  Anyone have any ideas, suggests, etc?

Thx!

PSC

Anyone know how to login to the embedded vRealize Orchestrator - TCP 8281 (Embedded for Content Management) on the vRLCM appliance?  Trying to troubleshoot the Content Pipeline workflow

I already opened port 8281 and I get a vRO login prompt; but i dont know what user/creds to use.  I tried the default vRLCM user admin@localhost but that doesnt work

https://docs.vmware.com/en/vRealize-Suite/2018/com.vmware.vrsuite.lcm.12.doc/GUID-2950711E-0A98-4281-92B7-6269C95A1634.html

Enter the following on vRLCM appliance:

sed -i '$a\iptables -I INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 8281 -j ACCEPT' /etc/systemd/scripts/iptables

sed -i '$a\iptables -I OUTPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 8281 -j ACCEPT' /etc/systemd/scripts/iptables

sed -i '$a\iptables -I FORWARD -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 8281 -j ACCEPT' /etc/systemd/scripts/iptables

systemctl restart iptables

My root issue is that the Pipeline fails to update GITLAB with my content...

VMWare Horizon Client - Arch Linux

I know Arch Linux is not an officially supported distro but I would greatly appreciate your support. I have a tower and a laptop both running Arch linux rolling release. I have VMWare Horizon Client 4.9.0 on both. I have problems using the windows key and the alt key in the guest operating system. My tower works as expected, both the start key and the windows keys are ONLY relayed to the guest. I need to hover at the top and minimize the client to go back to my host. However, in my Dell Latitude, alt and windows keys are relayed to the host, i.e. I cannot do an alt-tab in my guest at all! What would be the cause? Both my devices run the same operating system but it works on one but not in the other.

PS: I have tried using an external keyboard, same behavior

as suggested by the message, I just need to click the edit button in order to type user/password...but actually I only can see the "rebuild" button. Any suggestion?

Thank you!

Workstation 15 (vmx-16) OVAs Importing as Workstation 14 (vmx-14) Hardware Version

I am testing out v15.0.0 build-10134415 on Windows 10. I found that if I create a VM, and export it to as an OVA or OVF, then re-import it, Workstation 15 tells me that the VM has a compatibility of Workstation 14, and I need to upgrade it before it reads compatibility of Workstation 15. When I manually analyze the OVF file, it reads vmx-16 as the compatibility version, which is for Workstation 15.

This seems like a defect in Workstation 15. If so, is there a fast way to have a developer notified?

The partition shows up on the array that appears in devices, but I don't see anything in the datastores. I'm seeing the following log details in vmkernal.log that appear pertinent to me.

Bridged networking with vmnet interface

Is it possible to set Fusion to use bridged networking on its own vmnet interface? The NAT networking options use vmnet1 and vmnet8, but bridged uses the same interface that is bridged, instead of creating its own vmnet interface for the bridge
