Unable to enable network encryption in vSphere Replication 8.2

$

I upgraded from vSphere Replication 8.1 to vSphere Replication 8.2, but I cannot seem to find a way to enable the new checkbox "Enable encryption for VR data".  I read through the documentation (Network Encryption of Replication Traffic ) and looked for the presence of the VIB "vmware-hbr-agent", but this VIB was apparently not installed on the ESXi hosts.  Is there a manual way to install this VIB?  Does the VIB not get installed for upgrades from VR 8.1 to 8.2?  The only VIB that appears to have been installed is "vr2c-firewall" (8.2.0.5495-13479329).  Does anyone know how to install "vmware-hbr-agent"?

Thanks,

Bill

ELX_bootbank_elx-esx-libelxima.so conflict between patch baseline and HP custom ISO.

In esxupdate.log when checking compliance in VUM:

ValueError: VIBs ELX_bootbank_elx-esx-libelxima.so_12.0.1108.0-03 and ELX_bootbank_elx-esx-libelxima.so_12.0.1108.0-03 have unequal values of the 'payloads' attribute: '[elx-esx-libelxi: 1602.936 KB]' != '[elx-esx-libelxi: 1493.833 KB]

This is from a host that was installed with the 6.7U2 HPE Custom ISO then patched with the "critical" VUM baseline.  It seems the baseline installs a conflicting vib which breaks VUM compliance checks from that point forward.

If I remove the vib with esxcli software vib remove -n elx-esx-libelxima.so, it allows VUM compliance scanning to resume but then the host reports as non-compliant against the critical patch baseline.

Is there a definitive fix for this?  Can I somehow blacklist this vib within VUM?  We don't even need it -- we don't have this hardware!

Disappearing apps after provisioning

Hello Everyone,

Did any of you encountered an issue where you are provisioning an appstack and you install an application (either exe or msi) and it installs fine with no errors and then when you reboot and click final OK the application is gone? Also, if I push it to end user the application is gone as well. I want to add that for sure the appstack is attached as other applications on the same appstack are present. I don't seem to be able to pinpoint what might be wrong. So far I found Symantec VIP Access (exe) to do that and one other msi based install that do that. We are currently on WIndows 1809 LTSC with AppVolumes 2.16

Any help would be much appreciated

Metric Thresholds in vROPs 7

$

Can anyone confirm if you can configure a maximum value that vROPs will store for a calculated metric?

Here is my scenario. I am having to re-write a whole bunch of reports that were written in vROPs 6 which used Super Metrics extensively (these were created to cater for our own thresholds and limits). We embarked on a rightsizing exersize for our estate and one of the metrics we used was cpu|size.recommendation which showed the number of vCPU that an oversized VM could be reduced toand still cope with the same workload. The figure always seemed super agressive, 16 vCPU down to 2 vCPU was not uncommon. With vROPs 7, this metric is no longer available, instead we are presented with a metric which displays as  summary|oversized| Virtual CPUs which gives us the number of CPU that a VM can be reduced by(subtly different to the old metric as that showed what it could be reduced to). Simple enough to transpose in a SM (Provisioned vCPU - summary|oversized| Virtual CPUs = correct number of vCPU for the VM based on its workload).

So I've written the SM and written the report, but have noticed that in no single case is the value of summary|oversized| Virtual CPUs> 50% of the original provisioned vCPU. Now my real question is, has there been a decision taken that caps the value of this field or is it configurable in the Policy to be more or less aggressive?

Any help/guidance/advice gratefully received.

Monitoring the VMs using VROPS,OS compatibility for installation of VROPS

Hi Folks,

I'm new to this environment, I have few simple questions.

1. On which OS platforms we can install VROPS?

2 .is it necessary to have VMWare Vsphere to be installed in the same environment for VROPS installation?

3. How to monitor the VMs configured in our environment through VROPS ( just by deploying the VCenter adapter plugin on VCenter server helps us to discover the VMs in VROPS? ) ?

3. pre-requisites for VROPS installation and configuration

Thanks

Sandeep.

Performance Feedback and Advice

$

0

Hello Community!

I am hoping to get some feedback and/or advice to help make some VDI performance related decisions. Below is some information about what our current setup looks like:

- ESXi hosts have - Intel 2 socket 12 cores/socket HT enabled. 2.6GHZ CPU / 512GB RAM

- All Flash Storage SAN using 16Gb storage switches etc...

- Horizon View 7 / vCenter 6.5

- Windows 10 1809/1709 virtual desktops. (running VMware tools/Horizon View desktop agent)

- Linked Clone desktop pools

Currently we are running 2vCPU + 6GB RAM. This is under-provisioned as I see our CPU Load AVG is usually between .5-.6, and RAM is way under-provisioned. We are noticing that with all our security and Office 2016, Google Chrome etc...that our performance is starting to suffer. By this I mean that we are seeing, at the end user, CPU staying at 100% longer when launching browsers/apps (it comes down but not a fast as it used to), higher page file access, and just general "latency." Currently we are running 3:1 vCPU to pCPU consolidation ratio. Our storage metrics show that we in no way suffering (IOPS, Service Time, etc...).

We are recomposing this weekend to 8GB RAM (and reserving 4GB) as we have enough RAM per host to handle this easily. I expect this will help certain workloads, but I doubt it will help handle all the additional security and such that have been added to the environment. I have been able to get Endpoint Security to follow the vendors best practices for scanning and exclusions, but it is still taking a toll. I am currently planning on testing 3 different virtual machine configurations, but I am wondering what others may be running, or if anyone has some additional feedback on settings that I can try to adjust for better overall performance.

Test 1: (Running on 1 host separate cluster/storage LUN for testing)

4 vCPUs (2 socket/2core) + 8GB RAM (4GB reservation)

- This configuration is showing "spikes" of high CPU RDY and CO-STOP. By spikes I mean that when I have ESXTOP refreshing at 2 second intervals, I will see this spike occur for an interval and then "recover" when the next refresh cycles. The CPU Load AVG is usually around .90-1.09. I changed out the LSI scsi adapater to a PVSCSI adapter to see if I could save some CPU cycles. Using this setup it takes my vCPU:pCPU ratio to 6:1 @ 40 VMs per host. I also see pretty bad NUMA numbers (like 8-14 of the 40 VMs will be below 70% of the N%L metric..with some of those down below 20%). I can not go below 40 VMs per host or I will not have enough hardware to support my environment.

Test 2: (going to start next week)

3vCPU (1 socket/3 core) + 8GB RAM (4GB reservation)

- Has anyone run 3vCPU with Win10 1709/1809? Any thoughts on this configuration? It would allow me to go to, at worst I hope, a 5:1 vCPU to pCPU ratio at 40 VMs per host. I am considering using a PVSCSI adapter for this as well just to see if I can save any CPU cycles at all. Thoughts?

Test 3:

4vCPUs (1socket/4 core) + 8GB RAM (4GB reservation)

- I know that cores per socket etc...doesn't make much difference anymore. This will use the 6:1 vCPU to pCPU ratio again as I need at least 40VMs/host. Undecided on the SCSI adapter type. I don't expect this one to show any better results than Test 1 honestly. Thoughts?

Bottom line is that in my simple mind, 2vCPU + 6GB RAM is under-provisioned, and based on ESXTOP reviews, 4vCPU is over-subscribing our CPU resources and impacting NUMA. Customers have reported that 4vCPU does appear more responsive, and Stratusphere shows that CPU queues, logon times, and overall CPU performance on average are better. Again ESXTOP is showing that 4vCPU results in spikes of high RDY and CO-STOP occurring at fairly regular intervals, so I am concerned that this will start to show up at the end user side sooner than later.  This is why I am thinking that 3vCPU may provide close the same performance gain as 4vCPU with a slightly lower impact to the back-end resources. Still it is hard to use 3vCPU as my binary mind wants to stick with 1-2-4-8 etc...

Any advice, feedback, or any crazy ideas/thoughts that I can try?

EDIT:

We disabled View Storage Accelerator when we switched over to the flash based SAN. I am thinking about turning it back on to see if it will help reduce the CPU utilization, of the hosts, during customer logon. I don't like the idea of slowing down Refresh/Recompose operations, but the flash SAN should make it more tolerable. Does anyone have any metrics on the amount of CPU utilization is reduced by using VSA? I am not worried about logon times as they are well within our expected baseline, it just looks like the majority of stress is during customer logon...for CPU.

HP SAN 10gb hba only 1gb to windows. Linux faster

Hello.

I have a single host running 6.7 13980272 build. connected to a HP MSA2050 via 10gb HBA to a HP DL 380 G10 connected to LAN at 10gb to Netgear 10gb switch. the SAN has 20

Using Hiperf3 to test copy speed on windows server. Getting around 4gb on the windows host. When running same test on linux I'm getting between 9gb. this is across the vswitch.

Any suggestions of what I can do to increase speed on windows because the performance is unacceptable. Or is this down to overhead of windows virtualisation.

Automating "Add Key"

Hi

We use certificate authentication for many of our systems. So for all my REST Hosts I need to add a private key to a keystore . If I manually run the workflow "Add Key" then create a REST Host that uses the private key everything works as expected when I do my REST calls.

What I am trying to do it automate the "add key" workflow. So I created a customized version of the workflow. The main difference is that I am retrieving the PEM encoded cert and key chain from a Resource Element with a MIME Type of text/string. Now if I create a REST Host using this key my REST calls are not authorized. This leads me to believe something is going wrong when I am adding my key. The only thing that seems different between what I am doing and what the "add key" workflow is doing is in the presentation of the workflow the input for the cert is a multi line.

Horizon Help Desk Plugin for Horizon Agent

So apparently in 7.8 maybe 7.7 they added the Help Desk Plugin for Horizon Agent as part of the Horizon View Agent install.  If you install the agent by hand you can go ahead and install this but if you use the command line to install it apparently does not install.  Does anybody know the command line switch for this component?  The Horizon View documentation for 7.8 does not have this component listed in the command line switches.

Hi all,

I want to install vmtools on CentOS, but I cannot find vmware-user in /etc/bin, and after i use `find` the result is

I checked and found that someone could run vmware-user-suid-wrapper on Ubuntu:不做死就不会死……VMware Workstation 12 里的Ubuntu14.04升级后,虚拟机桌面无法适应客户机了 - Chinley的大杂烩 - CSDN博客

But on my system, is a *broken* symlink. ./vmware-user-suid-wrapper gives me:

vmware-user: could not resolve symlink: No such file or directory

vmware-user: failed to start vmware-user

Does anyone have any tips / tricks / ways to debug this issue?

Thanks in advance!

NSX-T native Gateway firewall, not processing further rules

$

Hello,

I'm testing NSX-T in my lab, and I faced an obstacle with the Gateway firewall. I have four rules, one for DNS, one for DHCP, one for internet access, and the last one is a catch-all set to deny any other traffic, and I've found that it processes only one rule, and skips (or ignores) the rest, so, the VM would get an IP from the DHCP server, and fail to query DNS. this quote from a VMW article:

first rule that matches the packet has its configured action applied, and any processing specified in the rule's configured options is performed and all subsequent rules are ignored (even if a later rule is a better match).

So, does it mean what I understood? that this firewall is useless? .. How can I set a logical north-south firewall then please?

Storing tags in variables

$

Hi,

I'm trying to assign each tag assigned to a VM to a separate variable. If I run the command below it'll store all of the tags in the $allTags variable:

$allTags = Get-VM "testVM" | Get-TagAssignment | Out-String

Lets say for example the VM "testVM" has three tag categories with tags assigned to each:

1. Tag category = Application; Tag = "SQL"

2. Tag category = OS; Tag = "Windows Server 2016"

3. Tag category = Backup; Tag ="Yes"

How would I store each tag into a unique variable? I've tried using the example below but it fails and I cant for the life of me figure this one out.

e.g. $appTag = $allTags.Tag.Application

Hi,

I am having some difficulties getting UEM to personalize Windows 1803 start menu. I have a custom layout. First time login, the layout is set properly for all users. Any subsequent logins the start menu layout is missing apps. It is the same exact apps. Removing UEM and the layout works fine. It is the organization custom layout; therefore, I must deploy it. Anyone had any luck with 1803 and higher.

Solved:- VSAN health service controller firmware HCL issue

   VSAN Health Check Bug

Recently , while working on one of the VSAN issue , discovered a bug with VSAN health service .

Scenario:-

All the ESXi hosts in the VSAN cluster were updated and patched to same level , but still one out of 7 hosts in the cluster was reporting as "Controller firmware is not VMware certified "  , with a warning sign on the cluster .

6 out of 7 hosts were reporting '15.17.09.06' version to VSAN and one was '15.15.06.00'.

Below is the alarm received .

Bug:-

VSAN health service was discovering the Firmware package build version for the 6 out 7  hosts and was reporting FW version for one the host .

Fact was , all the host in the cluster  had the same controller driver and firmware version .

Solution:-

For firmware validation ,please run below command for Dell servers .

1)Locate /opt/lsi/perccli

2) Run the command  "./perccli /c0 show " and you will get below output .

(Please refer attached )

Refereshing the VSAN service on the affected server , re-ran the controller firmware discovery for each host , and this time it was reporting the Firmware package build version for each host .

You can  restart the vSAN health service with the following command: /etc/init.d/vsanmgmtd restart

After fix , below will be the output.

(Please refer attached )

2 popup dialog boxes before starting my VM on Catalina

Hi All,

Am running VMWare Version 11.1.1 (14328561) and am starting a Windows 10 VM. Am in the latest version of the Developer Beta of Catalina (10.15 Beta (19A526h)).

When I start my VM, I get two pop up dialog boxes. 1st says "com.vmware.VMMonHelper" is an app downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?" and the 2nd says "com.vmware.KextControlHelper" is an app downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?"

If I click Open on each dialog, my VM opens fine. I'd just like to get those pop up dialog boxes to go away. I know that apps need to be approved in the Control Panel / Security & Privacy area, but those two apps don't show up for me there...

What do I need to do?

Thanks in advance!

Unable to take quiesced snapshot

$

Hi everybody,

I've a probelm when I try to take a quiesced snapshot on one virtual machine.

the error is:

An error occurred while taking a snapshot: Failed to quiesce the virtual machine.

An error occurred while saving the snapshot: Failed to quiesce the virtual machine

scenario:

vsphere 6.5

VM OS: windows server 2012 r2

vmtools version: 10.1.7

I detect that when my backup is failed, netbackup use the quiesce mode to take the snap.

The snapshot failed since netbackup and if I take it directly on vcenter when I check the quiesced mode.

I tried that:

     - reinstall vmtools

     - try the backup without vmtools (in others VM this works, how netbackup don't detect vmtools can do a normal snapshot.)

     - reinstall without VSS module.

     - the service "vmware service provide" is stopped.

     - I follow this trobleshooting: VMware Knowledge Base

     - starting VSS services.

     - starting Virtual Disk service

I've read this post, Unable to take quiesced snapshot but I can't find the solution there.

I've restored the vm to the last healthy backup, and the error persist.

do you have any idea about it?

thank you very much.

Way to list number of VMs deployed from a specific template image?

$

I am trying to find out how often certain VM Templates are used for provisioning in vRA. I believe the VM template name is stored in the clonefrom property during deployment. I am having trouble figuring out how and what to query for this history. I have tried cloudclient vra request details, but am unsure where in that data the template name is stored, if it is there at all. I have also tried the vra API catalog-service/api/consumer/requests, but can't seem to find it in the requestData field. To complicate issues more, we are using image profiles, so I can't just filter off of the blueprint name deployed as the same blueprint may be used for multiple image templates.

Would appreciate any help or pointers for gathering this type of historical data from vRA.

Thanks,
Darren

Time sync issues between VCSA & PSC

$

Running 2 VCSA 6.5 with an external platform controller and ESXi 6.5. The ESXi hosts are pointed at a NTP server as well as the 2 VCSA's and PSC. One of the VCSA is not showing the correct time while the hosts and 2 other appliances are. I can connect to the one vCenter, just not the other.

I have tried the following:

Rebooted the VCSA and PSC.

Stop/Start/Restart the NTPD service on the VCSA.

Tried registering the VM on another ESXi host, but then I lose network connectivity. Using a distributed switch, so I am guessing this is why I am losing the network connectivity.

Changed the VCSA to get its time from the host.

Everything that I have tried has not help and I have run out of any other ideas, so seeing if anyone else can provide further assistance.
