vDGA support with HP NVIDIA K4000 passthrough

I am trying to use vDGA in a HP Proliant DL380gen8 and an HP NVIDIA K4000 video card. When this works I will use this configuration for View Horizon clients. But when I create a VM and add the PCI device that is available after the passtrough configuration is completed I receive the following error when starting the VM:

An error was received from the ESX host while powering on VM w7-view-template-20140110-jvdm.

Failed to start the virtual machine.

Failed to register the device pciPassthru1 for 4:0.0 due to unavailable hardware or software support

I am desperate to make it work. Can anyone help me out of this?

Thanks in advance,

Jan

Vsphere Flash Read Cache and View

Hello,

I just added two flash cards to my view servers. VFRC is working OK with servers, but I wanted to accelerate user's view guests.

I want to accelerate the system disk (the one inherited from golden image). I tried configuring VFRC on the golden image, and after that taking a snapshot.

When recomposing I see that the linked clones do not have VFRC activated, so they don't do flash caching.

How can it be done automatically, as the only way I see for now is changing the guests HD VFRC properties one by one.

Thank you!

Hi all,

Is it possible to install Workstation 7.1.3 on a Mint 13 with kernel 3.2.0-23 on a x86_64?

My original Workstation was on a SLES 10/SP4. It worked perfectly for a long time.

Now I move to Mint and I can not install. Look all over the internet with no luck.

Original Workstation

VMware-Workstation-Full-7.1.3-324285.x86_64.bundle

uname -a

Linux Mint-13 3.2.0-23-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 10 20:39:51 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Thank you all for your comments,

LACP with Cisco and VDS - loadbalancing mode does not match?!

Hi guys,

I have a VDS (5.1) setup with LACP and load-balance by IP hash with 4 NICs.

On the physical side I have two Cisco 3750 in a Stack. Everything is regarding LACP/port-channel is configured.

When I do the health checks in the Webclient everything is fine (VLAN, MTU and Teaming mode).

However, when I run show etherchannel load-balance on the Cisco I get src-mac.

I think it should be src-dst-ip.

But on the other hand, as written above - the VDS health checks does not complain.

What do you think?

Should I configure the load-balance setting to src-dest-ip ? Will there be a distruption of service?

Thanks!!

.NET wrapper for VDDK 5.5

Does anyone have an up-to-date wrapper for VDDK. I found an old one, but it seems to only cover VixDiskLib. I am specifically looking for examples on VixMntapi with the hopes of creating a tool to replace the now "discontinued" vmware-mount.exe command line utility.

VDDK 5.5 missing vmware-mount.exe

With the release of VDDK 5.5 the command line utility vmware-mount.exe has been removed. The release notes for VDDK 5.5 also note that vmware-vdiskmanager.exe is not included either (although it is included).

Does anyone know what the future of vmware-mount.exe is? We use this tool frequently and hate to see it go.

Can anyone suggest a replacement command line utility that can be used in place of vmware-mount.exe?

Can we also expect vmware-vdiskmanager.exe to be missing in the next release of VDDK?

Thanks in advance.

Realtek 8111G, nic identified but no flow

I Recently got myself a shuttle ds47. It has dual onboard realtek 8111G nics. Vmware esxi 5.1 identifies the nics as realtek 8168 adapters. The assigned ip and mac address of the nics shows up in my switches, but i can't ping the esxi host, and there is no flow.

any ideas? Or do i just have to wait and see if vmware decides to support these adapters?

Is it worth to use Vcenter heartbeat?

Guys,

I have been thinking of FT and Vcenter heartbeat features available with VMware. I have read some articles about heartbeat, but not really convinced about its effectiveness over FT. Can anyone please help me in understanding their differences and usage in different situations? Can't we use FT for vcenter server (provided DB and vcenter server is the same)?

Many thanks.

Windows Server 2012 R2 High Resolution Issue

Hi,

I've got a Windows 2012 R2 VM on VMWare Fusion 6.0.2.  As soon as I enable "Use resolution for Retina display option", and maximize the window to the 1400x900 resolution I run on my Mac, the Windows interface becomes unusable.  The screen does not redraw corresponding to any user input (mouse or keyboard).  E.g. I can mouse over the start button or click any interface elements and nothing happens.

If I resize the VM window and allow the screen to redraw, eventually I get to a point where the screen is scaled correctly and input is registered properly again.

Attached are a couple screenshots:

In this image the window is "maximized", the VM isn't rescaled properly, and mouse/keyboard input doesn't register (or at least the screen doesn't update to show that input).

Screenshot 2013-12-12 21.08.14.png

In this image, the window is sized down enough so that the scaling in the VM is crisp, and the screen redraws and handles input properly.

Screenshot 2013-12-12 21.08.47.png

This does not happen with my Windows 2008 R2 VM.

Initiating Recovery Plan test from command line

$

Hi,

I need to initiate SRM Recovery Plan test using any available scripting solution: (PowerCLI, vCLI, tools, etc).

We have VMware SRM v 5.1.1. Is there any other way to initiate Recovery Plan test, except doing it from SRM/vCenter GUI?

I know that I can call scripts from the Recovery plan, but can not find any tool or command to start the recovery plan test itself.

Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

NFS and LACP

$

I have a vSphere 5.0 deployment where I have to leverage NFS.  I have the below contraints and wanted to share my approach to see if any one has any strong feedback or could play devil's advocate.

Contraints:

1) NFS Protocol of choice

2) Only a single switch cisco 3750 for small sites and (2) 3750 MLACP support for larger sites.

3) Only 4 nics all copper available for storage.

4) Netapp vendor

For sites with only one physical switch I am going to create two seperate vmkernels on same subnet (VLAN) on a standard switch and each vmkernel will have two nics all active.  VMkernel port groups will have IP hash as load balancing policies and physical switch will have required ports configured with LACP (802.3ad).

For sites with two physical switches I will have each vmkernel spread across physical switches.  I will also have two vmkernels on a same subnet on a standard switch and each vmkernel will have two nics all active.  VMkernel port groups will have IP hash as load balancing policy and physical switches will be configured to support MLACP (802.3ad).

Netapp will have VIFs to support NFS in Multimode to allow for multiple IPs.  Each datastore will have a different IP.

I was contemplating of using multiple subnets for the VMkernels but still haven't completely made my mind yet.

Thanks

how to create multiple vlans in vmware workstation

$

Hi All,

I have a desktop with 16gb of RAM. I have installed Windows 7 and VMware workstation 10. I am running my virtual ESX Lab. I have couple of ESXi hosts -- DC -- VC --- openfiler and couple of xp machines running on ESXi hosts.

Everything works well with no issue however they all are in same vlan. I want to create different vlans like from 30 to 35. Place DC - VM's and storage on different vlans and then make them communicate.

This way I want to learn VM networking with some feel of production enviornment. How can I achieve this on VMware Workstation.

Thanks

Questions regarding best practice for hardware

$

Hello All.

I suspect my questions have no answers, but here we go..

Presuming the CPU's are of the same frequency and generation, which is better:   Fewer physical Sockets with more physical cores/socket OR more physical sockets with fewer physical cores/socket?  (For example, A "8 Socket server populated with dual core CPUs" or a "2 socket server populated with octo core CPUs"? -- Of course, .

Along the same line, Which would be better performing:   A cluster with 10 hosts with single sockets, or 5 hosts with dual sockets?  (Same CPUs, and with the understanding that no one VM requires more resources than the individual host can provide.  No CPU or RAM contention)

Thoughts?

Thanks.
