Virtualizing RSAT with ThinApp 5 - MMC MSC problems

$

Hi All,

After a few months of browsing, I am finally posting something because I need help!  If I can get this problem solved, I plan on publishing a new recipe here to the discussion boards to benefit those who are running into the very same problem.

I have done *tons* of searching on this topic; add command-line attributes to the Package.ini file; use the /32 switch for MMC...none of which are working for me:

- ThinApp version 5.0.0-1391583

- Windows 7 SP1 x86 (clean install, joined to domain, using admin account to package apps)

After installing RSAT to my VM, when attempting to start AD Users and Computers, I get this error message:

"MMC cannot open the file C:\Windows\system32\dsa.msc

This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC.  This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file"

My ThinApp and target VMs are both running the exact same Windows 7 SP1 x86 build, so I know it's not a platform issue (and people have done this before me, so....)

For what it's worth, Active Directory Administrative Center works fine, so does the PowerShell snap in.

AD Domains and Trusts, AD Sites and Services, AD Users and Computers, Certification Authority, DFS, DNS, File Server Resource Manager, and Group Policy Management all exhibit this error.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Can not use entire space available in datastore

Hello

we have a HP DL580 G7 server with P410i raid controller and 8 x 1 TB HDDs.

I create a raid 1 with 2 HDDs(1 TB) and raid 5 with other 6 HDDs(5 TB) and install ESXi 5.1 in first datastore (1 TB).

after installation when I wanted to create the 5 TB data store, (ESXi detects and shows the 5 TB available space) it only uses nearly 2.5 TB !!! and can not use the entire space

I also installed the ESXi 5.5 but still no luck.

As you see attached image pulse view is unusable when there are high number of regions. If we switch to tabular view with 1 sec update that table redraw taken forever and nothing is usable.

It has been a long time since I have encountered such a wonderful tool for engaging, evangelizing, and learning like CloudCred accomplishes. (Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego circa 1994 comes to mind)

It has sucked up a tremendous amount of hours, though I find it enjoying.  Thank you VMware & CloudCred team!

just deployed vCenter 5.1 appliance won't boot

I just deployed the vCenter appliance and it won't boot.  I used the OVF and VMDK file method as outlined in these 2 articles.  I'm attaching a view of my datastore.  The only corrective action I've taken so far was to delete the appliance and re-deploy it with the same result.  I've tried both thick and thin provisioning.  The VM shows 2 VMDKs

I'm not sure what my next steps should be.  Please help.

Basic usage of ESXCLI

Hi guys,

Sorry for being a dummy, but I am really struggling with making the esxcli work in my environment. I have two PC's with esxcli installed. On the Win7 machine I don't even know how to start the CLI and on the Ubuntu machine I do know how to start it but I am struggling with the command syntax. Basically I wanted to try to force a shutdown of a vm on one of our three hosts, but I do not know how to specify the one I want to connect to.

I started to follow the instructions here: VMware KB:    Powering off a virtual machine on an ESXi host

But when I type:

esxcli vm process list

it asks me to specify the host.

So I tried:

esxcli vm process list 10.3.0.72

and thenit complains about syntax.

Can you please point me to the right direction?

I have two 5.5 hosts and one 5.0 host.

Cheers,

Martin

Mirage Restore

Hi Guys i am using Mirage 4.23 as PoC and just testing some restores.

Firstly i have migrated a machine from XP to windows 7 using the migration wizard.

All went well with the migration once it was migrated to win7 i could login but after looking at the current action in the mirage client it was stuck at pending restore.

When i went into the Mirage MMC on the server i noticed under ALL CVD  my client had a restore option. I ran through the wizard and again the client started to restore the endpoint, once it was finished it wanted to restart windows which i did. I noticed my user data was now on the desktop but the size of the restore was pretty  large No where near the size of user data.

Not quite sure why i had to do this, can anyone suggest whats going on at this stage?

Secondly i walked through the apply base layer to another windows xp endpoint this client was not a CVD. Once the layer was streamed down it asked me to restart which i did, during the startup i noticed a splash screen at ctrl+alt+delete saying Your system is being prepared for logon and will be available shortly. Logon may be slow or temporarily unavailable) Is there anyway to force this process to reboot as soon as the various steps are completed?

I logged back in again and rebooted manually but the mirage client was still at pending restore status and once again i had to use the mirage server mmc console to run through the restore wizard, again on the new windows 7 client it starts to restore - prefetch i am a just wondering if this is the normal process mirage takes when using the wizards.

Thanks in advance.

Somewhat undocumented commands/features

There seems to be a lot of undocumented commands that Mirage can do that are very helpful in certain circumstances - like the SIS extraction (which would have been EXTREMELY helpful the other day) and other command line type commands.  Is there any additional documentation that shows everything we can do with Mirage like that, like a Advanced Mirage Admin Guide?  If not, can we have this discussion be a listing place for commands everyone finds?

My contribution is the CLEANSTATE=1 command.  This completely removes the settings on the Mirage client and reinstalls like new (from my understanding).

The full command is ...

to uninstall completely:

msiexec.exe /x MirageClient.msi CLEANSTATE=1

Now if this is documented somewhere else, my apologies, I hadn't seen it until support had me try it once.

vCenter 5.0 com Erros !!!

Amigos,

I'm looking for some assistance in creating a new RAID5 and logical drive from 4 new 900Gb SAS drives recently added to a HP DL380 G7 server using the HPACUCLI command

There is already a RAID1 consisting of x2 146Gb drives that contains the ESXi 5.1 install And a RAID5 array consisting of x12 300Gb drives on a HP MAS DAS device

When I run "controller all show config" from  HPACUCLI you can see the x2 146Gb RAID1, the x4 new 900Gb SAS and the x12 300GB drives Here is the output.....

Gauging performance impact of a PowerCLI report on vCenter

$

How can I tell how much of a performance impact my powerCLI report will have on the performance of my vCenter Server?
If I run a report for example that pulls a large number of events from vCenter Server and sorts through them, is that processing and memory usage going to be primarily on the VM I'm running the report from?  How much load will it put on vCenter itself?  (I see RAM utilization going up substantially on the VM I'm running the report on)
Thanks!

Hello

I want to replace my old PowerEdge 1950 by a new R620.

So I have installed ESX 4.1 on the R620, then I integrated it in my vCenter.

I updated ESX 4.1. The version is now 4.1.0 1363503.

The R620 has two processors E5-2650v2.

I try to power on a VM on it :

     Debian 7 amd64

     Kernel 3.2.0

After the grub, the VM stops and said : panic early exception 0d rip 10 error 0 cr2 0

Limiting remote access by user to Horizon view

$

I am just wondering what others are doing in this circumstance:

We have a customer that is transitioning from Citrix XenApp to VMWare Horizon View.  In their Citrix environment, they are used to restricting the remote access via AD groups.

The new Horizon View environment has a View security server and two connection servers.  The customer is not currently using two factor authentication.  Has anyone found a way to limit who can access the virtual machines via the security server without using an extra set of connection servers?

Thanks,

Warren

Using Invoke-VMscript to log off users

$

I recently needed to write a script to copy and execute some files on some local machines, I was able to use Invoke-VMscript, and it worked just fine.  Now, I want to use it to only log off a user.  I will only put up the necessary line, since everything else I have tried has been working...here it is:

Invoke-VMScript  -VM $vm -GuestUser 'Someone' -GuestPassword 'Password' -ScriptText "c:\Windows\system32\Shutdown.exe /l /f"

I just can't get it to only log the person off.  I can easily log onto the VM click start and type shutdown /l /f, and it works, but since that didn't work in the script, I used the full path.  I've tried single and double quotes, and I tried putting it into parenthesis.  Any ideas?

The Guest OS is Windows 7.

I need t upgrade from ESXi 4.1 to ESXi 5.1, no vcenter server.

This is the first time I have been on here and also the first time for an upgrade.

I need to do this upgrade asap and I am leary of the data I have. This is a stand alone Host, so no datastores other than what is physically on the Host.

What I have read is basically stick the CD in and run it, answer some questions and your done. Is it really thatsimple?

I also have one additional question, I need to increase my datastore 2 before its an issue, I have the drives, just like the ones that are currently in it, how would I do that?

Thank You all for your help.

My first PSOD

I've never seen a PSOD until today, and I have no idea how to diagnose it.  I am running vSphere Essentials 5.5 on a single HP DL380p Gen8 server.  I have a 2012 VM and a 2012 R2 VM.  A colleague was trying to install the SQL Analysis services on the 2012 R2 VM and we got the PSOD.  After rebooting the host, we retried the install of SQL Analysis services and it crashed in the same spot.  This could be coincidence, but regardless, I just Google'd my way into finding the dump file, but now I have a rough screenshot of the PSOD and a 60MB dump file that I don't know how to read.

I can't reach the guy that registered the license, so I can't open a support request with VMware until late tomorrow morning and I'm posting here in hopes I don't have to wait that long.  Ideas?

Windows 7 (Sysprep)

I am looking to start implementing Windows 7 into my Vmware View pool environment and I am having a few issues with that plan.  I am trying to sysprep my Windows 7 Pro so that when the View Manager creates teh desktop from my template that is builds its self to the point where it is sitting at the alt + ctrl + del screen.  At this time mine still wants to go through that first time logon stuff that includes the time zone, local user account password, locations, and PC names.  What do I need to do to customize that portion out so it is to where I want it to be or what can i put into my sysprep unattended.xml file to move past this part?  Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Problems when switching form the Host to the VM, when the VM is using full screen mode and multiple monitors (Fusion 6, Mavericks)

$

0

I have a MBPr Late 2013, with 2 Dell 24" screens connected via Thunderbolt. I use only the external monitors, i.e., the MBPr is closed and the screen is turned off.

I have several VMs running, different versions of windows. I run some of them on full screen mode, with "all the displays enabled" option. There are times when switching between host' apps to the VM, or between VMs, when the focus returns to the VM the screens get incorrectly set: they are swapped in the Windows config and the host-secondary-screen (secondary for OS X, and originally secondary in Windows too) is changed to be the primary, the windows of the open apps "moved" and that display (in my case, is the one in the left) is set to the correct resolution (1920x1200) but shows a black bar on top and scales the VM screen to match the remaining space, which makes it look blurred That is solved enabling/disabling the "show menu bar" option in the View menu in Fusion.

I'm running Mavericks with all the available patches and updates applied. Fusion is version 6.0.2.

This doesn't happen always, and I haven't found a way to reproduce it 100% of the time. But this happens enough to be a real inconvenience.

On a related note: I tried to send this as a support request several weeks ago, and I only got a page telling me "Unable to complete your Request". I tried again today and got the same page.

Thanks in advance,

Rodrigo Gómez
