Deploy Desktops to specific ESXi hosts

$

0

I have a cluster of 4 ESXi nodes used for the VDI desktops. 2 out of the 4 hosts have vGPU hardware cards. When I create a pool for vGPU, I'm only able to select the cluster object to deploy against (i.e. the individual ESXi servers don't show). When the pool is being created, ESXi hosts within the cluster are randomly chosen. If a desktop lands on one of the ESXi hosts without a GPU card, the desktop pool will disable provisioning (because the vm has a vGPU profile and is looking to be deployed on an ESXi host that has a GPU card installed).

I have to vmotion the vm (stuck at customizing and powered off) to an ESXi host with a GPU card and then re-enable provisioning on the pool. It then completes.

This is obviously not the way we want the vGPU pool deployed. My question is how can we specify during pool creation which ESXi servers within the cluster that we only want the desktops to be deployed against. Once again, only the cluster object is shown and available to be selected during pool creation.

Thanks

interrupt lost when trying to run redhat (not enterprise) 6.2 as guest

I am trying to run redhat 6.2 (circa 2000)* as a VMware Player 14.1.5 guest  under Win 10.

Although I can install the OS, i can't get it to actualy run - during boot, it loads the busLogic driver, and then i just get 'interrupt lost' messages.

Redhat 6.2 came with linux kernal 2.2.14-5.0

What is the magic combination of settings I need to get this to run properly?

Annoyingly, I HAVE managed to get it running with VitualBox, emulating a buslogic scsi harddrive.....

Cheers

Followed Docs but USB device does not auto-attach to Windows VM. Please Help

I am using VMware Fusion Professional Version 10.1.2 (8502123) and I have a

Smart Card reader attached via USB.  I followed the Docs and set VMware USB

settings to mount this card reader to Windows but everytime I start the Windows VM

it fails to auto-connect.  It always leaves the card reader connected to the Host

which is of course MAC OSX.

I have to manually open the VMware USB settings every time to select this USB

device for windows even though the pull-down list for it is set to Windows. Total

pain in the butt.

What is going on here?  It should just work.  Can someone tell me how to fix this?

Hi

We have a major problem, which we are in the process of logging with VM support but I thought I'd see if anyone has come across this.

We have lost access to our IBM XIV storage, IBM said there are no issues with the storage, we don't see any datastores but we can see the Fabric channel disk eui names  with capacity info and free\used space but all state not consumed.

We are running Vsphere 6.7, 4 hosts and 1 vCenter.

Please Help.

I'll update and close this if VM support manage to sort things out

Thanks

Adding VM tags workflow

$

0

Hi,

Based on  this blog - https://code.vmware.com/forums/3055/vrealize-orchestrator#579949, I am testing the workflow to add tag to VMs by invoking a powercli script from vRO workflow.  In short here is what mentioned in the blog.

$DC = "%%location%%"
$appCode = "%%appcode%%"

If ($DC -eq "DCNAME1") { $vc = "VCNAME1" }
If ($DC -eq "DCNAME2") { $vc = "VCNAME2" }

##### Imports Core Module  #####
If (!(Get-Module VMWare.VimAutomation.Core)) { Import-Module VMWare.VimAutomation.Core }

##### Connects to vCenter  #####
Connect-VIServer $vc -Credential $creds | Out-Null

##### Validates tag exist, and if not, creates it, and attaches it to specific category  #####
If (!(Get-Tag $appCode -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue))
{
    New-Tag -Name $appCode -Category (Get-TagCategory APP_CODE) -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
}

##### Executes tag assignment  #####
if (!(New-TagAssignment -Entity (Get-VM %%vmName%%) -Tag (Get-Tag $appCode) -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue)) { return $false } else { return $true }

##### Closes connection to vCenter  #####
Disconnect-VIServer * -Force -Confirm:$false

Custom action:

Invoke Scrip Custom Action.png

Scriptable task.png

I am passing my vm tag as input attribute just to test the workflow. When i run the workflow, i can see  the logs where the input attribute replaces the variable in the powercli. But i keep encountering the error "The term '?' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again."

It seems to be a powercli related error but have verified each line and no "?" term exists here, I even replaced the script to exact same as pasted in the blog( with values pertaining to my environment) and still hit on the same error. If i am to hard code the varible values and run the powercli script, it runs perfectly fine.

Is there anything that i am missing. I am no javascript excpert. Appreciate any help on this.

i am pasting the logs here.

Trying to Add VM Tags Via vRO Workflow

$
0
0

UPDATE: Just realized that for the property (vRA.Deployment.Tags) I only have the tag name entered in the Value column for the dropdown. Do I need to add a way to reference the tag category? Not sure how to add that to the property.

UPDATE 2: Doesn't look like the workflow requires a tag category. I'm trying to force the workflow to give me more information in the logs, see at what step it's failing.

UPDATE 3: Found the issue, but not sure how to fix it. So the issue is that in the Variables section of the last run of the setVcTags workflow, I can see the following:

vmName: (here it gives the correct VM name)

errorCode: "Could not find VM (Dynamic Script Module name : findVcVmByName#7)"

Because the result of vmName isn't getting properly passed to the vm attribute (type: VC:VirtualMachine), or at least it can't find it based off that name, the workflow ends.

I may end up opening a ticket with VMware to see why it's not getting passed properly.

Hey everybody,

Novice vRO user here (yaaaay) - so I've been tasked with having vRA assign 1 of 2 tags to every single VM when it's being created (for these examples, "Backup Tag 1" and "Backup Tag 2"). We're doing this to enable auto backups in Avamar.

Here's the site that I've been using: Assigning vCenter tags using vRealize Orchestrator – The vGoodie-bag

So far I have:

  1. In vRO client, run "Import vAPI metamodel" successfully.
  2. Imported this package: vCenterTagging/com.vGoodie-Bag.library.vapi.package at master · KnutssonDevelopment/vCenterTagging · GitHub
  3. Went to the setVcTags workflow in vRO (vGoodie-Bag > setVcTags) > edit > endpoint > changed to "https://[my vCenter FQDN]/api"
  4. Created property "vRA.Deployment.Tags" as a dropdown (X = Backup Tag 1, Y = Backup Tag 2) and added it to the Blueprint.
  5. (I already have a LifeCycle Property Group with pretty much all the "VMPSMasterWorkflow32" entries, plus two "CloneWorkflow" ones, so just made sure that was in the Blueprint as well.)
  6. Created a new Subscription: setVcTags > Machine provisioning > Lifecycle state name = "VMPSMasterWorkflow32.MachineActivated" > State phase = "POST" > selected the "setVcTags" workflow from the imported package > Finish
    1. NOTE: This is one of the steps where I got confused, since they mention sorting workflows in vRO but don't give any information at all - I'm assuming the fact that I chose a state phase when creating the subscription means I'm good?

Now when I build a VM in vRA, it successfully builds, and after a while vRO says that the setVcTags workflow ran successfully (under Logs it has two messages - "Settings vCenter Tags" and then "Tags: Backup Tag 1") - however, no Tags appear in vCenter for that VM.

I'm assuming I'm just missing something with how I've set this up in vRO - obviously vRA is calling the workflow because I see it running, but nothing's making it back to the VM. Maybe I haven't tied in the right action at the end of the workflow or something? I'm really sorry if I've missed something obvious, this is my second time trying any serious workflow, and the first one I'm piecing together myself.

Let me know if any other info is helpful, and I would love any suggestions of what to check next. Thanks!

Does a diagnostic partition on a LUN preclude anything else from using the rest of that LUN?

I have a SAN LUN with 8TB of space.  There is a diagnostic partition on that LUN taking up approx 110GB.  VMWare doesn't recognize the rest of the space on that LUN.

Why not?

java.util.date and Date objects

$

I'm working on a workflow getting the lease end date of deployments.  That returns a java.util.date object.  Is there a way to convert this to a Date object?  I'm trying to get the days between the current date and the lease end date.  I can get that, but it returns a number like this:  81.54834221064814

What i would like to do is convert the java.util.date to Date so i can pull the year, month and date out and create a new date with a certain time on it.

Or alternatively, how can i take 81.54834221064814 and trim it to only be 81.

Is there a way to delete a VM from Active Directory while the VM is being deleted from vCenter?

$
0
0

So I was just asked this question last week and am searching for an answer.  I came across this thread Remove objects from AD when a VM is deleted from vCenter with vCO  which works great for me for my vRA environment, but what about machines that aren't built by vRA or are built by a set of scripts that clone VM's from templates, give the VM's specific names, join them to a certain domain, etc.  Is there a custom attribute that can be put on a template so when the VM is deleted it's removed from AD?  I'd prefer this to be automated.  I understand I could use PowerShell to use the Remove-ADComputer command, but that seems to need a text file or something and I want it to happen when the machine is being deleted from vCenter, not after the fact where someone could forget to run the script.

So is it possible?  I'm testing this on vCenter 6.5, but the environment in question would be vCenter 6.7.

Thanks in advance.

The stretch guest display option not being available for my Win7/Win10 VM since I upgraded my Workstation from 14 to 15. I cannot use the "fit guest now" or "autosize/autofit guest" option for my 4K display on my laptop. It is no solution to change the guest operation system to a WinXP system (the option is in this mode available). The USB 3.0 compatibility and the USB input devices cannot used. Is this a bug or new design?

I am developping custom credential provider for a horizon remote desktop. I need to get authentication informations that is authenticated with Horizon Client on the client side.

Because Horizon don't give authentication informations to the credential provider.

If I use RDP protocol, I can get a user and domain name from WTSQueryInformation(Windows API). But If I use PCoIP or Blast, I can't get none of informations.

I checked "Session Enhancement SDK" and "RDP VC Bridge SDK". But I couldn't find such apis.

Can I get a user name and domain name and password of horizon client on remote(desktop) side?

Is there any SDK that has such functionality?

Powercli equivilant to esxcfg-volume -l

Hi All,

I have a recovery site with replicated luns, and I am in the process of creating scripts to help automate the recover.  Long term we will be using SRM, but until we get there I am trying to script to list out all of the mounted and recovered LUNs, which can be mounted without resignaturing.  From the command line it is

'esxcfg-volume -l' to list out the vmfs uuids which can be mounted

'esxcfg-volume -m VolumeName' to mount the volume.

At this point I cant figure out how from powerCLI to get the list made in esxcfg-volume -l.

I have looked at https://communities.vmware.com/thread/330817 and tried the

$dsView.QueryUnresovledVmfsVolumes() but it returns nothing.  Even though if I do the esxcfg-volume -l it returns tons of stuff.

Many thanks for the help

PowerCLi Script loops

Hello,

I've taken this Script for Datastore Tags:

Connect-viserver xxxxxxx -user xxxxxxxx -password xxxxxxxx

$CMDBInfo = Import-CSV .\DS-Tag.csv

# Get the header names to use as tag category names

$TagCatNames = $cmdbinfo | Get-Member | Where {$_.MemberType -eq "NoteProperty"} | Select -Expand Name

# Create the Tag Category if it doesnt exist

Foreach ($Name in ($TagCatNames | Where {$_ -ne "Name"})){

    Try{

    $tCat = Get-TagCategory $Name -ErrorAction Stop

    }

    Catch{

    Write-Host "Creating Tag Category $Name"

    $tCat = New-TagCategory -Name $Name

    }

    # Create Tags under the Tag Categories

    $UniqueTags = $cmdbinfo | Select -expand $Name | Get-Unique

    Foreach ($Tag in $UniqueTags){

    Try{

    $tTag = Get-Tag $Tag -Category $tCat -ErrorAction Stop

    }

    Catch{

    Write-Host "..Creating Tag under $Name of $Tag"

    $tTag = New-Tag -Name $Tag -Category $tCat

    }

    # Assign the Tags to the VMs/Hosts

    $cmdbinfo | Where {$_.($Name) -eq $Tag} | Foreach {

    Write-Host ".... Assigning $Tag in Category of $Name to $($_.Name)"

    New-TagAssignment -Entity $($_.Name) -Tag $tTag | Out-Null

    }

    }

}

The csv File looke like this:

Name,Location,StoragePool,Sync

SYNC_LA2_SVC_INFRATIS_VOL_01,LA2,MIXED,JA

SYNC_ARS_SVC_INFRATIS_VOL_01,ARS,MIXED,JA

ARS_SVC_MS-ONLY_VOL_17,ARS,MIXED,NEIN

LA2_SVC_RELEASEMGMT_VOL_01,LA2,MIXED,NEIN

LA2_SVC_RELEASEMGMT_VOL_03,LA2,MIXED,NEIN

LA2_SVC_Releasemgmt_Restore-Test,LA2,MIXED,NEIN

The Script generates only the catagory "Location" with the Tags LA2 oder ARS. Then it runs in a loop with no errors. The other catagories and tags are not generated.

What's wrong?

Thank you
