Please fix the installer!

I'm a long time user and customer of VMware. And there is one thing that is bugging me since all the years: The installer is a complete mess! I don't know if I'm the only one running into this issues on and on again or if the QA of VMware is just that sloppy.

Everytime I want to install an update of VMware, it takes me multiple hours. Because everytime the setup gets stuck at either "Uninstalling Virtual Network Drivers", "Cleaning up Legacy Network Drivers" or "Installing Virtual Network Drivers". When this happens, it kills my network connection, Systray shows a "disabled globe" icon and I have to restart my PC after waiting a good grace period, while still hoping it recovers eventually.

Yesterday I received a notification that the update to Workstation 15.5 is available and tried installing it.

  • Uninstall stuck at "Uninstalling Virtual Network Drivers", internet gone, "disabled globe" icon in Systray.
  • Waited for at least 20+ minutes.
  • Decided to restart Windows.
  • Had to manually download VMware 15.5, because the previously installed VMware was already gone.
  • Ran the installer.
  • Stuck at "Cleaning up Legacy Network Drivers", internet gone, "disabled globe" icon in Systray.
  • Waited again 15+ minutes.
  • Decided to restart Windows.
  • Ran the installer again.
  • Stuck at "Installing Virtual Network Drivers", internet gone, "disabled globe" icon in Systray.
  • Waited a good time.
  • Restarted Windows again.
  • Ran the installer once again.
  • Finally finished successfully.
  • Shut down PC and went home, since it was already getting late.

Next day (today) I came back to the office, turned on PC, got my coffee, started VMware and my guest machine.

  • Was wondering, why the USBdevices I need to work are not there.
  • Checked VM -> Removable devices
  • Everything empty, except a few default devices (CD, Network, Printer, Sound)
  • Searched the internet.
  • Found that a "VMware USB Arbitration Service" should be running.
  • Checked in services.msc and tried starting the mentioned services.
  • Can't start. Error 2: File not found.
  • Searched the internet again.
  • Found suggestion to completely un- and reinstall VMware again and try to run the installer with /clean parameter afterwards.
  • Uninstaller stuck at "Uninstalling Virtual Network Drivers", internet gone, "disabled globe" icon in Systray.
  • Searched the internet.
  • Found a thread mentioning that there is a "VMware network install library executable" process which is "Not responding" which you can kill.
  • Did that.
  • Uninstaller continued and wanted to restart PC.
  • Restarted PC.
  • Suddenly Keyboard was not working anymore on the logon screen!
  • Could logon using Accessibility tools with On-screen keyboard.
  • Device manager showed exclamation mark for the keyboard and details said something about registry errors and "Code 19".
  • Spent 1+ hours trying to solve that.
    • Solution was to remove everything from "UpperFilters" except "kbdclass" in the registry HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e96b-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
  • Started the VMware setup again with /clean option.
  • Stuck at "Cleaning Up Legacy Network Drivers", internet gone, "disabled globe" icon in Systray.
  • Killed "Not responding" "VMware network install library executable" process again.
  • Setup still did not continue though.
  • Restarted Windows.
  • Started the VMware setup again with /clean option.
  • Finally it went through and finished successfully!
  • Started VMware and my VM.
  • USB devices were there.
  • Suddenly internet was gone again. Systray just showed the same "disabled globe" icon.
  • Restarted PC.
  • Finally, after 2+ hours everything works now!

And seriously, I'm not kidding or exaggerating. Only the keyboard and USB issues were new though. Otherwise this is the exact same process I'm going through everytime I'm trying to update VMware Workstation. No matter what Windows version I'm using. This has already happened with Windows 7, 8, Vista and now Windows 10.

And everytime when it works again, I'm just glad that I can finally continue to work and forget about it. But this time was really a bummer. Don't know what this is or if I'm the only one. But I really wish VMware would do something about it. If they need help debugging I'd be glad to help them!

Change vswitch to use a different vmnic?

Hi All,

I am starting to pull out what hair I have left over here! I have been trying to figure this out for a few days now and have tried the steps below on two of my hosts unsuccessfully..

I have 5 ESXi 6.7 hosts. On each of them, the Management network (vmk0) is on vswitch0, which is uplinked using vmnic0. I need to re-use vmnic0 for adding a new network to the hosts. I have a 10GB port (vmnic2) unused that I want to move vmk0 & vswitch0 over to, since my new network does not have any 10GB ports available.

I have connected vmnic2 and set the VLAN on the physical switch port accordingly, and changed vmnic2 to be Uplink 1. I have also followed the instructions in this document to set the Management vmKernel to use the MAC of vmnic2, but once I disconnect the patch going in to vmnic0, I cannot communicate with the host until I plug it back in. It seems that for some reason, I cannot change the host over to using vmnic2 for vswitch0.

What am I missing that I am not doing correctly?

Thanks!

VM Management on Surface Pro

Hi,

I have a Surface Pro (5).  I can run VMs on it with Player 15 without issue.  If I manage a VM with Workstation, and do something like Clean Up Disks, it pretty much destroys the Surface.  I get a BSOD, then the surface won't boot.  I have gone through troubleshooting with Microsoft, to no avail, and they sent me a new Surface.  I thought it might have been an anomaly, so I tried it on the new surface.  The same thing happened again.  So again, MS sent me a new Surface.

Has anyone out there encountered this?  I want to be able to manage VMs on the Surface, since this is my work machine and I use it for business travel to clients.  Any insight anyone might have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

VMWare Workstation 15.5.x Priority bugs

Both 15.5.x release so far have shared this same bug.

With previous 14-15 versions when a vmx was set to Normal grabbed and Low ungrabbed via the gui my vmxs would show

priority.grabbed = "normal"
priority.ungrabbed = "idle"

and process priority was properly handled.

Starting with 15.5.0 and now again with 15.5.1 I get a repeating error the first time I run a vmx created previously but not yet run by 15.5+,

Value "idle" for variable "priority.ungrabbed" is not a valid value.

After this it sets the entry in the vmx to

priority.ungrabbed = ""

Then after changing the option to low via the 15.5+ gui the vmx shows priority.ungrabbed = "low" but the priority always remains at normal when grabbed or not. Amusingly I found that setting the priority to High while grabbed and Normal while ungrabbed works like I wanted all along so that when it is grabbed it remains at normal priority (despire being set to high) and then ungrabbed it now runs as low priority (despite being set to normal)...

The operation is not allowed in the current state. Can't create snapshot.

Recently upgraded my Dell T620 from 5.5. to 6.0 to 6.7. Now i can't take any snapshots. I tried restarting services.sh. Still can't. Error message:

NSX 6.4.1+ - NSX for vShield Endpoint

Simple question:

Is the free license NSX for vShield Endpoint still available in NSX-V 6.4.1+?

I need to use it for antivirus integration with Deep Security only using the Anti-Malware function.

Thanks in advance!

Error during provisioning: View Composer Datastore Fault: For Datastore - datastore-9188

Hello

Hope every one is doing well. I need help; hopefully someone can provide some help.

Environment:

2K16 Servers

View Composer 7.5.2

View Connection 7.5.2

SQL Server

Link Clones

VMware Tools 10.3.10

We are getting the following error when creating a Desktop Pool and adding LCs to a current Desktop Pool.

"Error during provisioning: View Composer Datastore Fault: For Datastore - datastore-9188"

The Datastore sees all of the hosts and all of the Hosts and our ESXi Cluster see's the datastore see it as normal.

We have rebooted our SQL, View Connection, View Composer and two of the ESXi Hosts that we suspect could be contributing to the issue and are in Maintenance Mode.

Esxi free version backup solution (4 VMs)

Hi folks,

I've been reading up on a lot of VM backup solution options...including this one, but still not able to make a decision for a backup solution that will allow me to backup the entire VM  (.vmdk) file and allow for easy restore.

The backup solution (if possible) should work with the Free ESXI version.

I've been using the free Veeam Agent backup to do file level backups daily and full and it has been working great for about 2 years now, but I'm concerned that if I have a total host failure.. my RTO will be very high.

Any suggestions on what I should do.. I'm willing to spend a bit of money if that is the right/only thing to do.

Appreciate your comments

Can't Reclaim Space from Deleted ESXi Virtual Disk

Hello,

We are running VMware ESXi 6.5.0 (build 4887370). We had a virtual machine that had two virtual disks attached to it -- one that was 100 GB and one that was 1 TB.

We started to get low on disk space on the host, so I deleted the 1 TB drive. I verified that the drive no longer shows within the configuration, and also that it does not show as a drive within Windows any longer. I also made sure all snapshots were deleted and consolidated disks.

However, we are not getting the free space back. Our available space went up a bit, but not nearly by the amount it should. Also, if I browse the datastore, it still shows a virtual disk file of 805.54 GB, which does not match the size of either of the virtual disks actually.

Any suggestions on how I can address this would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

copy-harddisk questions

Does the vm need to be powered off to use copy-harddisk? If not, does the VM suspend during the copy operation?

DCUI Interaction/Automation

Hi,

Is anyone aware of how to restore to standard switch (DCUI) via command line? I've traced various log files while executing it via the console but did not leave me many clues to work off of.

We have hundreds of boxes we need to do it for and would like to build some automation around it. (fwiw, tried leveraging host profiles to no avail...)

Thanks,

Thomas

ESXi and QinQ

Good day to all!

Very relevant question to me - can or can not Guest work with QinQ traffic? I looked over all the Internet, have read tons of articles. The answer is only one - You can't, even in VTG mode such traffic is dropped. There is one solution with changing ethertype, but it is too complex to realize. But life is strange and full of suprises. So

ESXi

Version:

6.5.0 (Build 4887370)

With Mikrotik CHR and ...   QinQ works well! I thought nonsense but it works! Created guest VTG port group, I created some SVLANs and User VLANs, all with standard ethertype and all works fine. May be something changes and nobody knows? So another test

ESXi

Version:

6.7.0 Update 1 (Build 10302608)

do all the same and ....... nothing works. Try to solve what's wrong. I see - QinQ traffic is passed inside the guest. Guest also double tags traffic. But outside of ESXi  ...... inner tag is stripped by someone

So what is it? 6.5 bug? Or all should be working at the moment and this is 6.7 bug? Or this is my mistake?

Help, please!

We have over 600 hosts that are failing to authenticate to AD

I have turned on the likewise debugging to try and help figure out why, some hosts in the same cluster will authenticate to AD but others will not.

Over 400 hosts are authenticating and over 600 are not.

MSI Z390 MAG TOMAHAWK,

процессор i9 9900k,

32гбоперативной памяти,

970 EVO SATA M.2 SSD 250ГБ,

4 ssd x 120gb, (под каждую виртуалку свой ssd)

MSI GeForce GTX 1060

Процессор: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 ГГц, Core i3 OR AMD Athlon 64 X2, или лучше

ESXi 6.7u3 PSoD Reoccurrences (Exception 13) - what could be the root cause

I have been runnng ESXi on a machine for about a year now, recently over the past few months, I have been experiencing more and more PSoD.

Without the slightest clue as to specifically what is the cause, I did grab the coredumps according to the support website, however, for a home user, to spend $300 on a support contract is a stiff price, System wise, nothing has changed on the system.

System Spec Wise:

1TB Samsung NVME Datastore

120 GB Intel SSD ESXi installation

AMD Ryzen 7 1700 Eight-Core Processor

64 GB ECC Samsung Memory

LSI 2008 HBA (pass through to guest)

6x 6TB Western Digital HDDs (pass through to guest)

GT710 GPU

X470 Master SLI/ac Motherboard

As the file is too large to attach here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1mkEnaov-kT1PFJojx5U1-HftmJWweCvthttps://drive.google.com/open?id=1mkEnaov-kT1PFJojx5U1-HftmJWweCvt

Above are the two latest dumps that have occurred on the system.

Is there some specific troubleshooting I can do to narrow down the steps related to  these dumps, as according to the support page (VMware Knowledge Base ) there is not any troubeshooting steps besides reaching out to VMeware Suport and shelling out $300?

Datastore is not appering (no volumes for existing datastores)

Hi everyone,

Currently we a running standalone configuration of StarWind Software with iSCSI Datastore on 2 hosts (1 storage host connected to 2 ESXi host via iSCSI)

We faced an issue:

Existing datastores are missing volumes after several reboots, all iSCSI paths are connected and devices is showing properly.

partedUtil getptbl /vmfs/devices/disks/<device-name>

Shows that partition is fine.

However esxcfg-volumes -l shows us nothing. Apparently, datastore is a missing a volume.

We cant browse a datastore and it not appearing in datastores tab.

And the question is how to restore a volume without a data loss? Is there any chance to restore the data from that partition or move it.

Appreciate for any assistance.

Thanks in advance.
